LTE 4G and 5G broadband Cumbria
If you are unable to receive even a moderate broadband internet connection (and we’ve seen plenty of such instances), you could achieve a decent connection through 4G LTE and 5G technology.
It’s not as complex as it might sound, it just means your internet connection is not through the phone line, fibre connection or cable connected.
What is LTE broadband internet?
LTE was introduced as a standard by the International Telegraph Union Radiocommunication (ITU-R) regulator as a path towards true 4G. This was necessary as much of the infrastructure wasn’t able to reach the level to be considered to be providing 4G speeds.
Theoretically, 4G LTE can reach speeds of up to 150Mbps downstream and 50Mbps upstream; this does depend on factors of location, equipment used and installation. As with most technology, the theoretical and practical don’t often meet; basically, it’s test and see but at a minimum, you should experience 20Mbps up and 10Mbps down.
What is 5G?
5G is the 5th generation mobile data network that is a new wireless standard following on from 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. 5G enables a new kind of network that is designed to connect at a speed range of ~50 Mbps to over 1 Gbps.
Although 5G is starting to be rolled out in the UK, not everybody will be able to get it, and, equipment and costs are still expensive; expect it to reach 4G cost levels in 2 to 3 years time.
Why have 4G or 5G?
There are many reasons you might wish to have 4G broadband capabilities. You may be too remote to be reached by the conventional methods of internet delivery, had enough of paying for line rental when you never use the telephone or simply wish to have the flexibility to move your connection wherever you go; e.g. mobile homes or canal barges.
Situations for 4G / 5G networks
- Caravans and static homes
- Canal barges
- Rural homes
- Temporary broadband internet
- Farms and agribusiness
- Boats and marinas
- Rural business
